overall, Stacy is a terrible, irresponsible landlady. it takes FOREVER to get her to fix something, and the maintenance guy is an old man that's not very competent. the building is old and things break constantly. over the past year, both the furnace and the water heater broke. the neighborhood is usually safe, but is not the safest place in Pittsburgh--we had an attempted robbery over the past year, though it's not the landlady's fault. the places has its pros and cons, so decide for yourself. Here are some of them. cons: -overpriced for the area -cold in the winter. the house is badly insulated, which means that it becomes freezing cold when the temperature outside drops below 70, and incredibly hot when it's above 75. The heat is controlled by the owner, and set to something like 68 degrees. Because of the poor insulation, even adding a side heater in the bedroom doesn't resolve the coldness issue. Someone ought to tell Stacy about the $8000 energy efficiency tax break. -maintenance is unpredictable and depends on Stacy's mood. Sometimes things get done quickly, other times you have to call repeatedly, and at other times they don't get done at all. In general, I'd say that major, life-threatening things get done (especially if all the neighbors call her repeatedly) promptly, while more minor cosmetic repairs don't get done at all. -what you see is what you get. Don't assume that the apartment you're renting will get fixed up before you move in. -noise. the undergrads infesting the neighborhood love to party on the weekends. this didn't bother me since I tend to stay up late, but I can see that this can be an issue for some people. be warned. -Stacy is absent-minded and not very organized. just because she promises to call you back about something doesn't mean she will. once the water for the entire building almost got shut down because of her late payment. pros: -unbeatable location. 15-20 min walk to Pitt or CMU, close to Craig street, and lots of buses around the corner taking you to the giant eagle, whole foods, the south side, downtown, etc. -apartments are fully furnished (even including kitchen utensils), which is very rare in Pittsburgh. -Stacy keeps to herself and doesn't harass you with unexpected visits like some private landlords do. -great neighbors. she asks for references and doesn't rent out the apartments to the first jerk that shows around. all the neighbors are affiliated with one of the universities, are friendly and responsible people.
