We had good luck with this place, and with Bob. We rented knowing his reputation left something to be desired, but the affordable rent and convenient location couldn't be beat. We had no significant problems with the place, and his workers were always friendly and quick to come to our aid. Bob was sometimes difficult to get ahold of, but we had no issues with him. I might have stayed another year, but he wanted to know whether or not we were staying for a second year by mid-December. We left the place cleaner than we found it and yes, we got our entire deposit back.

The reason I decided to come on here and write a review is because I know that people are way more likely to write reviews when they've had a bad experience than when they've had a good experience. Truth be told, our experience with Bob wasn't so bad. He was pretty good about getting someone over to us every time we called him about something that needed to be fixed and we eventually got most of our security deposit back. The house was a piece of sh*t and was not worth $2000 a month in rent but we knew that when we decided to sign the lease - that's the way things go in Oakland. The only real problems we had with him were that he took money out of our deposit for trash left on the sidewalk that was not our trash but our neighbors (we suspect he probably took off from theirs too) and he tried to take off for unpaid water bills that I had actually paid but when I sent him proof that I had paid him, he returned the rest of the money and didn't try to dispute it. In short: his places are dumps and he will overcharge you but his repair guys are good and he won't take money out of your security deposit for any minor damages.

Worst. Landlord. Ever. He seems friendly enough when you first meet him though he does rush you through the tour. But once you move in, expect that all to change. When we moved in he gave us a sheet for us to list all the problems in the house and return to him, it took him until December to even begin fixing anything, and when he did send his workers they never called ahead of time or even let us know they were in the house. They also came early in the morning and woke us up. Though they are quite friendly and a pleasure to talk to, it was frightening to find a bunch of strange men in my house when i was home alone. Bob, however, is not friendly in the least. Anytime we'd call for repairs or questions he'd rush us off the phone and just tell us to e-mail him. Then he'd never respond to the e-mail. Around Thanksgiving he began showing the house to potential renters for the following year and never called ahead of time. He even knocked on my door once when i was getting dressed and even after i told him to hold on a second still tried to open it. Oh, and to announce that he has entered your house, he just screams up the steps. We asked him to call beforehand a few times and eventually he got the hint, but he couldn't understand why. As far as the condition of the house, it's not the worst house in Oakland, but it doesn't hold heat at all. Our heat was at 55 all winter (just to keep the pipes from freezing) and our bill was over $600. There isn't any heating vents on the second floor and the ones on the 3rd floor don't work. I urge you not to rent from this man. It's simply not worth the aggravation.

Bob only did maintenance work on our apartment when he knew we were moving out. He was very disagreeable and hard to talk to on the phone - doesn't understand complaints and is rude. He often brought people to see the apartment without any advanced notice and walked in while some of my housemates just got out of the shower. The house itself has definitely started to fall apart - our shower leaked into one of my housemate's bedrooms and heat doesn't stay in the house very well. The bottom line is that Bob is a sub-par landlord and I dreaded calling him for anything.

Bob's staff is awesome. Really nice guys, but they sometimes take a while to get to the house. Bob on the otherhand is impossible to deal with. He doesn't seem to care about the house until it's time to rent it out. We also had numerous problems with our heat that caused our bill to be high and Bob didn't help at all with the cost. All in all, I would avoid renting with him.

Horrible Landlord. Someone kicked our doors in and broke into our house and he made us pay for it. My shower was leaking onto the closet of the guy who lived on the floor beneath me, and it took his maintainence people 4 tries and a couple weeks to actually fix it. The house has absolutely no insullation and all the heat seeps right out. Bob is incredibly rude and in no way helpful when you talk to him about anything. Last summer the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette did an article on slumlords in Oakland and Bob got a special section devoted to him. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06169/698919-85.stm Avoid renting from him if at all possible.

I lived in the house for 1 year. Whenever I had a problem, his maintenance crew was there within 2 days. When our door was kicked in by a stranger, a worker was there in an hour to check to see if we were okay, at 2 in the morning. The next day, the door was fixed. His staff is hard working and is quite friendly. We never had any real issues with Bob.

Avoid this guy at ALL COSTS. First of all, he does not check the place after a tenant moves out to make sure it is ready to be occupied by the new tenant. He relies on the new tenant to tell him everything that is wrong with the place. When we moved in there was tons of crap and damage left by the old tenant. It took maintenance at least 2-3 weeks to finally come out and begin taking care of our complaints. One of these complaints was that the carpets smelled like cat p***. We were promised new carpets before we moved in, but of course never saw them. It became painstakingly obvious that the house was in bad shape after about a month of living there. Lights burn out on a regular basis(much quicker then normal), the house retained no heat and windows were basically as useful as a piece of paper. Improvements were finally made when the inspector came, but most of the work was shoddy and improvements to the overall comfort factor of living in the house were minimal. So to sum up, avoid renting from this guy at all costs. His lease is a joke and hes really just an ***hole to deal with once you sign it. Maintenance's response is somewhat decent, but they are understaffed and the work they do is under par. The guy will try to cut corners wherever he can so don't expect ANYTHING to be done unless you call the inspector. Trust me it is worth an extra 100 bucks a month to rent from someone else as you will quickly see the money you are saving by renting from him quickly evaporate from high utility bills. I seriously have no problem bashing this guy because plain and simple, he defines the term slumlord and is still making ridiculous money off us students. So do yourself a favor and say NO to BOB.

Overall I had no major problems with the property and or the owner. The conditions were pretty good and if something happened the owner had workers come by as fast as possible.

The only time Bob provided prompt service was when the roof started leaking and when a water pipe broke and flooded my roommates closet. Other than that, all other requests for minor maintenance were ignored. Also, Bob showed potential renters the place without giving any heads up except "I'll be showing the house to people over the next few weeks." Even after complaining about his random house showings, he still continued to barge in without letting us know at least 5 minutes ahead of time.

One of the worst landlords in oakland. Definitely a slumlord. Avoid him at all costs. I don't have anything againt him personally, but he runs his business like a joke. I lived in one of his places for a year and it just sucked. I have talked to other people who have lived in his place and they all agree they regret renting from him. Hopefully the city will make him upgrade the quality of his apartments. Until then, I would steer clear.

Don't rent from this slumlord. Bob is a piece of trash and will cut corners at every possible opportunity. He's an opportunistic and inconsiderate renter. The only time you get any improvements done to your house is when you are leaving. He charges an insane amount of money for damages that were already present upon arrival. His apartments are falling apart and poorly insulated. They actually had our electricity running through our neighbors house. Don't give this asshole any of your money. Run him out of Oakland!

No heat on the 3rd floor, never did anything about it after tons of phone calls. Charged us for replacing all the carpet in the house when only 1 room needed to be replaced due to burns. We were broken into 3 times with loss of 8 laptops and a bunch of CD's and junk. All doors and windows were locked both times and there was no sign of forced entry.... take that as you will. After the first time we placed locks on all bedroom doors and never had anything stolen from anyones bedroom again. We also had Bob replace the deadbolt on the front door. The second time we were broken into there was also no sign of forced entry... coincidence? You decide. The third time we were broken into someone smashed in our back window and trashed our living room and kitchen. We were charged for the window with the explanation "we don't know what you guys did to that window, but it will need to be replaced". Bob will show up at all hours to show off the place without any warning and throw a huge tantrum if anyone's door is locked or if the place is a mess. If you rent from him get everything in writing, take pictures and get a city inspector in the first chance you get.

Robert Eckenrode is basically a criminal who cares nothing about tenants. To fully express every wrongdoing it did would take a novel, but to top a few off. Us students decided that we wanted to rent from Bob around springbreak. He assured us that he would hold the property while we all went home for spring break, for a fraction of teh down payment. We asked that bob right it on paper and he agreed. When the time came to meet up with him, he had us drive all the way out past Monroeville, in a town where we had no idea where, and met us at a children's lasertag place-bad start, then instead of offering us to hold the property for all of a week, he tried to coax us into signing the lease even though we weren't quite ready for that. We didn't sign it there but did end up living on his property. Bob place was falling apart as we lived there and we would constantly show up with very little warning (maybe 2 months prior he'd hint at it), worse, he would let people into our rooms, and pound on our doors at all times of the day waking us up and giving us little chance to get dressed. At one point, our carbon monoxide alarm, went off and we called the firemen. The firefighters had several choice words about the poor quality of our house, and when bob found out he flipped out and told us that if we are ever in a similar situation (carbon monoxide, fire, etc) not to call the firefighters, but rather to call him because he didn't want to get in trouble for maintaining such a poor quality house. Asidew from these terrible things, bob just generally is not a friendly person, but rather a very rude domineering jerk who doesn't care about you. Avoid this man at all costs, he drives a child molester van around and has a repuatation all throughout Oakland as a skum landlord.

I think I can safely say this is the worst slumlord in Pittsburgh. He told us that he owns over 90 houses in Oakland and THAT is why he can't get things done on time. Thats no excuse for a landlord!! He made promises to fix things before we moved in and did them halfway through our lease. The house was falling apart and he could have cared less. He puts plastic walls in the middle of rooms until houses have 10 rooms in them. Then he charges outrageous rent prices for these houses that look like they're going to fall down. We had a rat in our house and he told us to set a mouse trap! He also blamed us for problems in the house that were there when we moved in even though we brought them to his attention when we moved in. He preys on college students and steals their money. Bob drives around a crappy van to make it looks like he's poor but don't be fooled. Worst landlord EVER!!

Avoid Bob at all costs. There are so many reasons as to why I implore you to do this. however, I don't have time to write a novel. For example, our house was filthy when moving in, had no light fixture in the kitchen (which we were charged for upon moving out) and we had a broken fridge that froze everything (EVEN ALCOHOL!) We dealt with that from August until NOVEMBER! Also, his workers came in, removed smoke detectors, and we got charged for that as well. Bob should have paid us for taking care of the place. It was certainly cleaner when we left than when we moved in. Also, he is rude, doesn't return calls, and when something important is in question, don't ever expect him to take any action to remedy it. He also never calls in advance when he is going to show the place. Just comes in. (and forces you to wake up, unlock the door, and let him show your room) Stay away!

Pretty much left us alone, which is what I want in a landlord. When there was a problem, his maintenance crew was prompt and fixed problems quickly. Didn't nitpick and was friendly when we'd meet.
