Awful. They did not notify us of showings of the apartment but claimed they did. People would enter the apartment and not notify anyone. My ceiling caved in and it was not fixed for months. The apartment was dirty when we moved in even though they claimed they were going to have it cleaned. They took money out of our security deposit for things that were damaged when we moved in -- even though we had photographic evidence. AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS!

I would strongly advise against renting from Pittsburgh Land Company. It is owned by a man named Jim— builds expensive homes in Fox Chapel but rents out properties throughout Shadyside on the side. He clearly invests more time and energy in his homes, and uses the left over materials in his rentals.
I rented from him about 2 years ago, because the apartment was beautiful. I paid my security deposit and did not hear back, literally for 2 ½ months. I started calling weekly and then daily leaving messages without a return call. Just about the time I was going to give up and start looking for a new place, I finally got a hold of him and he told he hadn’t yet run my credit (although the check was cashed 2 months ago).
They did not answer or respond to my phone calls the week of our move-in, and I got the key the day after the lease started-- that was ok with me; however, if I had purchased a moving truck for that day I would have been in trouble.
My roommate and I both had our families help us move in, and it took about 4 people 2 days of nothing but cleaning to make the place inhabitable. You would wipe a window with a paper towel and it would be black. Also the sink and toilet were both leaking—the sink which sprayed out water was fixed in a few days, the toilet was never fixed.
It took about 6 weeks to get the air conditioners moved from the apartment, and 4 weeks to get them back in. It took 5 months for them to shampoo the carpet the lease indicated carpet would be shampooed prior to moving in. Due to our upstairs neighbors’ leaking plumbing, my roomate’s ceiling caved in, and her carpet was never cleaned after that—it also took about 4 weeks for the ceiling to be fixed.
Finally, when we moved out we lost about half of the security deposit by leaving the place about in a substantially better condition then when we moved in. The charges were outrageous—i.e. $40 to replace 3 missing light bulbs, $100 to paint a wall because the paint was chipped (I looked at the pictures I took when we first viewed the house, and the paint was chipped then as well…)
I’m not going to say “NEVER RENT FROM…” because that is ridiculous I do admit some of the properties are very nice; however, realize that the company is unresponsive and certainly does not put the customer first. You should also plan to lose your security deposit unless you leave the place immaculate; in which case you will still lose half as I found out.
Best of luck with your choice, and I hope this proves helpful along the way.

Never ever ever rent from this company/man (Jim). The company builds new, huge houses up in Fox Chapel, but "maintains" (I use that term loosely) apartments in the Shadyside area, which he pays no attention to. I don't know if he uses them as a tax shelter or what.
I lived at a property in Shadyside a few years ago. Problems from the get-go. Jim is impossible to get ahold of. He had no one answering the phone, I think it was a home office. From the start, I expressed concern about security of the side door. No response. Well, guess what happened? Someone kicked in the door and stole a bunch of my stuff. There were leaks in several places throughout this place - a veritable waterfall in the kitchen. We had a huge plastic trash can parked in the middle of the kitchen to try to catch it all. The walls were crumbling and wet in certain spots- if you had mold allergies you'd be in big trouble. The washer and dryer never worked. Pipes froze in the winter.
When I gave my notice that I was leaving, he would bring people in to look at it without even notifying. I didn't even know he was planning on starting to show it. I was in the middle of finals and he knocked once. Before I could even get to the door he waltzed right in! I wish I was naked at the time- that would've taught him.
Of course, I had to sue to get back my security deposit. He called me offering to settle the day before.
Stay far, far away. There are plenty of other places to rent, and you're not getting any bargains from this guy.
He's advertising all of the properties on Craigslist, saying he did all of these renovations, but it's all with leftover materials from his new home business. It doesn't change the basic problems with the apartments- look, the kitchens still have all the cheap appliances. He's hoping he can use "granite" and "hardwood" as buzz words to get people in and take their attention from other, much more important, problems.

Just like the previous commenter for Pittsburgh Land Company, I had an experience just as bad, if not worse. Not only would he not answer the phone, he refused to give me a copy of my lease and didn't understand how I couldn't move into an apartment that had (and I kid you not):
1. the stove in the living room
2. the bedroom and bathroom doors in the living room.
3. the toilet in the bathtub
4. the old bathroom vanity in the kitchen.
The place was filthy and uninhabitable. All the things he refused to fix he then charged me for after I moved out in my security deposit. I contacted the person who moved in after me to find out that not only were half the things not fixed, the things that were were fixed by that tenant! If I don't get my money back, I will gladly sue him.
The landlord is a jerk and a thief. AVOID PITTSBURGH LAND COMPANY AT ALL COSTS!
