I and a few of my friends had lived in this apartment block intermittently last 10 years. The apartments are spacious, with central air and reasonably good sound isolation, however, they are somewhat run down. The Landlord is a bit cheap and usually sounds not very happy when a tenant is asking to fix stuff, although he does make repairs reasonably promptly. Overall one gets a pretty good deal for the money. The price is hard to bit in Squirrel Hill.

I lived in this apartment in 2004. The apartment reeked of curry for the first month that I lived there - it was never cleaned before I had moved in. I called the landlord to ask for a new air filter & he hung up on me. Mr. Reddy is EXTREMELY rude. After I got the air filter; the problems continued. I ended up calling the health department because of the mold on the bathroom ceiling tiles and various other issues. The Allegheny County Health Department is VERY familiar with Mr. Reddy. He was given a time frame to make repairs & he made no repairs; but sent a note to the health department saying "tenant is satisfied with the repairs". My apartment was also broken into when I lived there due to him not changing the locks when the previous tenant moved out. My lock was a deadbolt & if I pulled my door shut; it'd fly back open if the deadbolt wasn't locked. I came home to find the deadbolt unlocked & the door wide open. He finally changed the locks and gave me new keys. I took the keys with me when I left. The next tenant in that apartment should at least have a new lock. The bathroom ceiling leaked & to "fix" the problem; he tore out my bedroom wall. And left a door sized hole (along with plaster chunks all over my damn apartment) in my wall for about a month. This did not fix the problem and I came home one day to open my closet door and have a chunk of something wet and soggy fall on my head. It was a piece of the ceiling (the closet was right next to the bathroom). I opened the bathroom door and my ceiling was on my FLOOR! I went up and informed Mr. Reddy about it and he asked me if I wanted a new apartment. I told him I wanted my security deposit back and the rent check I had just given him for the upcoming month back. He told me no and shut the door in my face. I moved out that night & put a stop pay on the check. He was nothing but rude to me everytime I would call with an issue or something that was the LANDLORDS responsibility to fix. He never really fixed anything and when he *had* to do something, he hired repair men who did a halfassed job and did everything cheaply. I would completely advise against living here. I have seen some of the other apartments in 2123 Shady Avenue -- there's a crappy aspect to all of them. Either the dishwasher leaks water and he won't repair it, or the ceiling leaks and he won't repair it, or the fire escape is covered with rust and separating from the building (in the event of an actual fire, you'd be screwed -- you'll either burn alive or get tetnaus and plummet to your death). Save yourself the time and aggravation -- the apartments may be cheap to live in but they're totally crappy. And it's rumored that there are roaches. I don't know if that's true or not, but it never hurts to throw that in.
