Mingma was pleasant and helpful to begin with, but once we moved in, we discovered multiple issues that took a LONG TIME to fix or weren’t fixed at all. There was a 2yr old fire extinguisher and NO SMOKE DETECTORS. I requested detectors on at least three occasions before they were installed. Many of the electrical outlets did not work or sparked and melted the plugs to appliances. After about a month of waiting, an electrician came- some outlets literally crumbled in his hands as he removed them! After he left, there were STILL outlets without service. The outlet by the fridge, for example, was an old two-prong so loose that the plugs for the (just as old) fridge would fall out, causing me to lose hundreds of dollars of food on multiple occasions.
Our lease began in January, within three weeks the heat went out. Amidst snow storms and general winter conditions we lived without heating for over a week before Mingma brought us two space heaters for a three bedroom apartment. This was a very kind gesture, but he 1)used this gesture as an excuse not to fix the furnace for another month and a half, and 2) refused to pay the exorbitant electrical bills he has caused us by the use of the space heaters to keep us and our pets alive.
There were a minimum of 8 occupants in the first floor, two-bedroom unit that played music LOUDLY starting at 6am and ending anywhere between 11pm and 2am. They also stole property from my porch and parts off of my bike. When I mentioned this to Mingma, he said that was something to take up with the tenants and not him. I am pretty sure the tenants were illegal aliens, had lived there for 8 years, and I was paying for THEIR water bill. They did not speak a lick of English, so it was near impossible to resolve the situation.
Around the end of February, my roommates and I began waking up with hives and bumps. It seems our partially furnished apartment had bed bugs- BAD! To make matters worse, one of my roommates was highly allergic to the bites and would swell up to massive proportions. Mingma told us “you must have brought it in with the futon”-the only piece of fabric furniture we added-but it was new! He refused to pay for treatment until well into April or May when a budget company showed up unannounced, let themselves in, and left a note of what needed to be cleaned before they would work. Two weeks later they returned and treated the apartment. A week passed and we were still waking up with bites. Bed bugs need a minimum of three treatments to resolve, not one. When we reminded the landlord of this continuing issue, he said he would take care of it and never did again.
We ended up requesting to break our lease because of Mingma’s inability to communicate and because of the massive health and safety concerns in the apartment.
When showing the apartment, he would show up whenever he wanted and literally NEVER gave notice.
Our parking space was frequently blocked by the downstairs tenants as well as used by his brother-in-law who lived across the street in-leiu of on street parking. The brother-in-law was very nice and helpful- we usually dropped our rent checks off with him to avoid more contact with the landlord.
Our security deposit was split between me and one other roommate. My roommate never received her security deposit (its been 2 years) and mine was decreased because he paid some guy to move out the furniture we left because he would not treat it and had no intention of spreading the bedbugs to the next place. A new couch was left along with a hammock. This is not $100 worth of moving. There was a note with my check stating that he deducted for moving fees and cleaning up after my small rodent. The floors were vacuumed and then the vacuum was thrown out, all debris capable of leaving was removed and I am certain there was no trash left behind.
Overall- don’t rent from him! In the 5-6 months I lived there, I lived with nothing but stress due to this landlord.
