The only problems I have had were minor and were dealt with within a week or two of me calling their office. They have always been courteous and friendly and give ample notice before entering the apartment. They take good care of the landscaping and the exterior of the property. The building was graffiti-ed once and they got rid of it in two days. I've been a day or two late on the rent a couple of times and they've never enforced their late fee policy. I am renting from them again. I would recommend them.

Renting from CR Kelly was the biggest mistake. Our contact, Tom, was a condescending asshole. He showed us no respect, rarely returned our calls, and always tried to scare us when he would (on rare occasion) come to the house. They never came to check on us unless called upon and when we asked for safety issues to be addressed (keyed lock on the backdoor and motion sensor light) they flat out denied us. The house itself is nice though. It is recently renovated, though no A/C. It is very spacious for a house in Oakland, which is rare. Three of the 4 bedrooms are very large but the 4th is like a closet. Our oven broke in November and they did not fix it until February. When I suggested we wanted to pay less rent because they were not upholding their part of the lease (to provide working appliances) they threatened us with a lawsuit. Don't count on getting your deposit back because they take a chunk out to steam clean the carpets (which they weren't even that clean when we MOVED in so who knows). And right before we moved out (July 2011) they tried to say my Dad did not pay rent from October 2010. Really? We had cashed checks as proof and I doubt they would not have brought it up in 10 months if that were truly the case. They do not care about your safety and only want a check each month. I would NEVER rent from them again and I would HIGHLY recommend avoiding them if at all possible.

I actually didn't have any serious problems with Kelly Realty, except for my stove. It was clearly at least 50 years old and we found a knife, a pen, and years' worth of food scraps inside of it. It was also rusting apart on the corners. We called repeatedly to have this cleaned (it really should have been replaced). When they finally came, they transferred all the crap from inside the stove to the floor! Other than this, everything was basically fine. I'm pretty easy-going (so wasn't bothered by the usual grime on top of cabinets, etc. that comes with an old student apartment) and pay my rent on time. I got my whole security deposit back minus the fee for carpet-cleaning, which was in the lease. I can't really judge maintenance except for my stove incident, because we never had another problem.

Coming from a tenant who not only paid each month's rent on time, but also early, this rental company is unprofessional and concerned mostly with making a maximum profit from students. First, anyone renting in this building should know that the heat is entirely electric. Since the building has little to no insulation, our heat bills have been $200+ per month for two bedrooms, and we have the internal thermostat set to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Second, the rental company's response to maintenance problems has been nonexistent. I believe that either all of the tenants' water pipes are connected or that the valves on the faucets are very old, because we have very little control over the temperature of any of our water. After water from the shower scalded my hand while I was grabbing a bottle of shampoo, I called on 1/30/10 to see if the problem could be fixed. I was assured that someone would be over to look at it. No one came, or if anyone did come, I did not receive a response as to whether it could be fixed. I called again on 02/04/10 and spoke to Bob, who said that the maintenance man doesn't like to travel all the way to Oakland, but that he would have him look at it the next day. Again, no one came, or if anyone did come, I did not receive a response. I called again on 02/13/10 to alert them to a problem with a lack of hot water, which I had been checking on the hour every hour for four hours, and again, no one came, or if anyone did come, I did not receive a response. I have also tried including notes with the rent check to hopefully reach another person in the office more attuned to fixing these issues, but it has been to no avail. Third, we do not have blinds on our front window, where people can see in from the street. Fourth, our refrigerator does not have a handle and is missing a foot, so it rocks back and forth. Fifth, both the wood of our kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets has rotted so that the bottom of the cabinet is actually the floor. I would definitely not recommend this rental company to anyone.

I rented a 1 bedroom apartment in this building.
In the beginning of winter, I had a problem with the lack of hot water in my apartment. Sometimes there would be no hot water for about 1-2 hours and when there seemed to be warm water, it did not last long enough to take a shower (~5 mins). I informed the management a couple of times. Finally they told me they are not going to install a bigger hot water tank in the apartment. So I spent the whole winter w/o hot water.
Also during winters, the electric bills were outrageous. Even though I kept the temperature at 62F, I was getting 150$ electric bills per month.
So stay away from these apartments.

They basically took over our apartment for days over the course of several months (with little or notice) to complete "improvements". These "improvements" included gutting the radiator heat system and tearing up the walls to install new electric heat (for the next tenants, mind you). On a regular basis our bathroom was unusable, our entire apartment was covered with dust from cutting drywall (i think those dust particulates are pretty dangerous), and I frequently woke up to the sound of power saws cutting through my walls.
It makes me wonder why they wouldn't do this while the apartment is empty between tenants.
The landlord has been completely uncooperative, unsympathetic to all of my furniture and belongings being covered in dirt, and apparently it's OK for them that my apartment is unlivable for days at a time.
If you value your privacy and have any sense of dignity don't rent from J R Kelly.

If you value personal space, attentive landlords, or privacy, do not rent from Kelly Realty. The receptionist at the Oakland office is one of the rudest women I have ever encountered. I understand that some rental offices have an attitude when dealing with college students, but this woman insulted my mother when she called to ask questions as well. Kelly Realty failed to respond to any of our requests for maintenance, including our suspicion of a possible gas leak in the apartment. They did, however, take over the apartment for several days at the end of our lease to do major construction on the unit while we were still living there. All of our possessions were covered in layers of dust and the apartment was virtually impossible to live in during those days. Kelly Realty often entered the apartment without prior notification, leaving me and my roommate to come home after work to an unlocked door and strange men in our apartment. The only way I was able to make any progress with Kelly Realty was with sheer persistence. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM!

The landlord is very helpful if you catch him on the street. Also very quick to respond to maintenance requests.
However you are supposed to go through the reality company, not just stop the landlord on the street.
Put in request for maintenace and he was out here in a couple days.

Many problems with the apartment; Ceiling leaks, heating doesn't work in half of the rooms, water is shared with the other 3 adjacent apartments (water temperature changes constantly if other people are using it in another apartment), also building has old electric, causing light bulbs to burn out about 5 times faster than they should.. there are other miscellanous issues too (loose floor tiles, tight doorknobs, etc). Horrible Landlord. We had a glass pane broken on our door in Feb, called the landlord the next day and the pane wasn't replaced until two months later. They managed to crack the replacement pane putting it in, too. They are not very responsive if you try to contact them.

I rented from this company two consecutive years. The first time, the place was pretty nice (Meyran Ave.) but there was no way to get out in the event of a fire in the kitchen since all the windows were barred up. Their solution was to use a hacksaw to saw through a portion of the bars? Thanks guys. That'll help me sleep at night, knowing that the only thing between me and freedom in the event of a fire is a piece of jagged rusty metal. What's a better way to die? Being impaled to death on wrought iron or sizzled alive? Other than that, it was okay -- a secure building with an intercom. However, the second place was kind of a nightmare. The whole place leaned to the right. It was on Semple St. I didn't mind the place itself so much, but the landlord kept showing the apartment without asking me, even though I specifically asked for the 24 hours notice I was legally entitled to. I don't think I should have to have strangers appear in my apartment while I'm in a bathtowel just because I'm a college student and they think they can push us around like cattle. Know your rights! The only thing is, they're a big company with a lot more money than your average Oakland student, so you probably can't afford to battle their lawyers should something go wrong.

I rented a large 1-bedroom as a CMU grad student, and it turned out quite nicely. The building is old, but well maintained. Neighbors are quiet. The building had been renovated not long ago, with new double-pane windows and individual heat and A/C installed in each apartment. Keeps things nice and warm in the winter without an outrageous electric bill. I did have trouble with a leaky window, but I stopped by the management office to let them know, and it was fixed by the end of the week. Overall, I have no complaints about the landlord, and the apartment is quite a bargain for its location and amenities.
