When I moved in I had to fix everything myself. All of the hardware was off the wall and I screwed it back it. When I called him and told him my bathtub was severely clogged, he told me to go buy a plunger and do it myself. You can plunge toilet, bathtub not so much! When my lease was up he refused to give me any of the security deposit back. After many phone calls (including one from me to my attorney), he finally gave me about half of it back, with a note explaining everything that was damaged in the apartment. I didn't damage anything. So not only will he refuse to repair anything, he won't give you your security deposit back unless threatened. Stay away.

I was glad to find a very inexpensive apartment in Pittsburgh that was close to the university. The apartment cost $500 per month, including utilities, and the condition and functioning of things in the apartment was completely reasonable given the low price. There was a problem with the heating at one point, and it took several appointments to fix it, but Mr. Tuckfelt did fix the problem, even coming on Thanksgiving Day. It was also a great benefit to me that Mr. Tuckfelt allows tenants to have dogs in the apartments, if they are well-behaved. The condition that the dogs be well-behaved ensures that other tenants will not be disturbed and that the apartments will remain clean.

I was renting from Gary for about six months when i hit a spot of trouble. My fiancee' was hospitalized, my grandfather had just passed, and I was falling behind in rent. We moved in to the place because it was affordable; that's the only reason. I overlooked the doors(they wouldn't close including the bathroom), the front door had a huge gap underneath it, there was a window broken out, (replaced with Plexiglas) and even this window had a crack. None of the windows opened, and if they did, they shut again or it was really hard to open(had to wiggle it open and closed). I had to do this because it was difficult and my fiancee' could not. The gas was red tagged and instead of fixing it, he had his maintenance guy rig the rusting, rotting out unit to work. The yard was a mess. I cleaned it without asking for deductions from the rent. The basement entrance was so disgustingly filthy that during the summer flies would swarm in abundance. I cleaned that also. The back yard as small as it was remained overgrown with weeds(no grass), and it had more garbage in it than the entire block. The fire escape was crumbling and if you walk into the basement there is mold all over the walls and it looks as though floor has piles of what could be cement that had used to be on the ceiling. I could look up at where my apartment was and see light coming through the many huge cracks. There is no insulation there either so the money we were paying to heat or apartment was also heating the basement creating a huge gas bill. He has a rat problem also. He had several boxes of rat poisoning laid out but never replaced or removed them. We had to leave quickly. I had approximately 2 hours to pack all my stuff(not his fault) so there was a small mess to be cleaned. There was no damage to the unit that yet another miss-matched coat of paint wouldn't fix. Keep in mind water drips down the interior walls of other units, toilets aren't repaired when asked, , water runs freely around electrical wires, to name a few other problems in the building. There is a clause in fine print on the lease, releasing him from renters rites. None of the tenants can pursue reporting him to any State agencies. You get this apartment "as is". I would rather try my luck with a shifty car dealer! I had to use him as a reference to get another apartment (it's on my credit report) and he had the audacity to complain about the state of the apartment. not even taking into consideration what i had done, shoveling the snow, doing the yard-work, cleaning around the dumpster which was repeatedly overfilled. I thank Gary for experience that is not soon to be forgotten, and would suggest that all people looking to rent any properties that he owns to do at the risk of their own health and well-being.

Our building is really old and in poor condition, but so is every other building in Oakland. Gary was very friendly and always answered the phone when we called. He let us have a dog and always brought treats for her when he stopped by. When my neighbors got robbed, he and his maintenance man were there within a few hours to fix the window that was broken. During winter, he brought several shovels over and refilled the salt several times a week, then called multiple times to make sure the walkways were clear. The apartment was in poor condition when we moved in, but we also moved in the day the other tenants moved out and we were allowed to move in early, so that was more their fault than his. We had to repaint and redo one of the showers, but he paid us and deducted the cost of the materials from our rent. These are all standard rental practices. As for the ratings below where people complain that he didn't give enough notice, if you know it's rental season and your apartment is so dirty that you need more than several hours to make it presentable, then you have some serious hygiene issues. How many times have you called to see a place and the landlord made a same-day appointment? It seems really convenient until it's your place and you're a slob (like the review below).

When I moved in, the entire 3rd floor was covered with spray painted obscene graffiti. The walls were covered. We asked him to paint over the walls, he said for us to do it. We agreed if we get a discount on rent. He wouldn't grant a discount, but said he would buy the paint. The paint had to be left-over from the 1970s. Plus there wasn't enough to cover all the walls. He was a jerk about the whole thing. Not recommended. You get what you pay for sometimes.

Gary Tuckfelt is the WORST landlord EVER!!! I had to fix my own kitchen floor because he never came to do it. Actually, I recommend making your own repairs because when he finally does have someone "fix" something, well, lets just say I'd rather have a blind monkey do it. My windows leaked, the wood was rotten on the porch, the doors didn't fit in the jams, I could hear every one of my neighbors conversations, and to top it all of I had a $500.00 heating bill!!! I would definately look into stteing up a tent in Frick park before renting from him!

When renting from Gary, you best hope that nothing goes wrong with your apartment, particularly in the middle of the night... because you probably won't hear from him until late the next day. Now-if he wants to show your apartment, then you will get a phone call nice and early the morning he plans to come, generally giving you only a few hours notice. Also- I recommend making sure that all of your doors close and that your glass panes in your windows actually meet the wood frames earlier than later otherwise you'll find yourself freezing mid winter as I did. When you first meet him, he will seem friendly enough and claim to be very attentive to his apartments... but I wouldn't make the mistake of renting from him again.

Ok, so far . . . people are right. Gary is nice at first, but not for long. He got ticked when we called the gas company because there was a gas leak FOR AT LEAST 3 MONTHS, he cheats his way out of anything, the guys he has for painting (unprepared stoners asking us for supplies) and Marty(aka, frog. . . is just messed up) He doesnt like fixing anything, for example: my windows are the kind where you turn a crank to open them; he went to fix it in september and when I moved out in may . . . still not fixed but I could push it open and pull it shut. The guy he has to fix things took it apart and said: "hope nobody opens it, it will fall out of the frame and is accessable from outside" To add to this, he never answers his phone.

Adhere to all the warnings. DO NOT RENT FROM GARY-I recommend trying out the homeless thing first. Someone in my building had her stove "red tagged" by the gas company, it took him over 2 weeks to take care of the issue & made my neighbor feel like she was causing him the inconvience! @ my place, the windows are old & door jams are breezy & in winter the place is an ice box & my gas is still over $300 a month. Also in my room there is a vent missing & you ca see directly into the basement-he also just raised my rent! Think i'm gonna try out that homeless thing.

Gary will give you a few hours notice that he will be showing your place, no more than that. Never the day before or anything reasonable. I work nights and so wasn't about to get up on 3 hours of sleep to clean the place up for him to show. Gary deducted $300 from my $600 deposit for having the place in "deplorable" condition when trying to show.
