The apartment was okay. It was cute and had good locks. It was kind of old, but I could deal with that.
What I COULDN'T deal with was getting robbed one night. Whoever broke in knew exactly where to find all of my items...my associates were either out of state or out of the country at the time. The detectives who investigated my report told me that their investigation led them to believe a maitenance worker invaded my privacy and stole my things. I brought my findings to E&J and they not only didn't dispute my suspicions, but they validated all of them with their shifty behavior and lack of support.
If you live here, try not to need any maitenance.

I didn't have any problems during the lease signing. The customer service people were great every time I called. However, after 6 weeks of being in the apartment, I found mold on the kitchen wall - LOTS of it. I called as soon as i found it. Mary came over the next day, i told her that i could not stay here with all this mold and that i could be out by such and such a date. She said they would release me from the lease, no problem. Shortly after, I was informed that I am released only when the repairs are done and the apartment is rented. They don't seem to understand that there is actual mold growing on my wall, they are concerned only with keeping income on this apartment. If the security deposit wasn't more than a months rent i'd just walk away, but that deposit is a big chunk of change!!!
Be weary. KNow your rights. I'm not thrilled with E&J.

With E&J, it's best to say that you get what you pay for. I had a private landlord previously, and I certainly miss her accessibility, flexibility, and kind nature. I went with this property because the price was nice, and it was available and listed early. However, they were not that flexible with move-in times, they had said the carpets would be cleaned (and I am betting they weren't), the apartment was to be cleaned by the previous tenant (and it wasn't), and they were not easy to get ahold of on the phone to tell us when we were clear to move. That aside, we like our apartment itself, although it's not in great condition. The main problem is the mold in the bathroom - not good for you, and they certainly will not fix it. It was all over the ceiling when we moved in, and it's only gotten worse. I keep trying to bleach it, but that doesn't fix the actual problem. Also, the building is not well-insulated like many older buildings in Pittsburgh. BIG gas bills in the winter. We had it set for 60 degrees most of the winter, and our bill was still $175 one month. We also had several problems with leaks in the kitchen, one from the blizzard (which was not uncommon) and several through the windows during downpours. Each time I called, did get ahold of someone, but had to wait for calls back (which took a day) while there was a deluge in our kitchen. It's been two months, and they still haven't come to repair the wet marks on the ceilings. Last, the lock on the main door sticks to the side if tenants do not turn it back the other way, so nearly all of the time our "secure" entry isn't "secure". That is a tenant responsibility, but the lock itself could be fixed and eliminate the problem if they want to advertise for having secure entry.
Bottom line, it's okay. Not the greatest, but probably not the worst. A bit cheaper than what I paid before, but with the G/E, and water not included in the actual price, I don't save all that much. It is what it is.

If I could put a -5 I would. These people are HORRIBLE people! They never uphold any promises they make as far as repairs or upkeep of the apartment and they are so rude to talk to and they never return phone calls. I bet the only positive reviews on here are from them themselves to try to save face.

This are horrible people to rent from! I should have known from the begining when we moved in we were given the wrong keys, then our sink was full of brown water and clogged, the tub was also clogged, the apartment was not painted or clean by any means. We never got any repairs we were promised such as new carpet (when we moved it it was frayed down in some areas all the way to the floor) new glass on the back door (it was shattered when we moved in) numerous leaks in the ceilings, cracks in the wall (the apartment was not level) etc. When you call to ask them about repairs they are rude and say it will be taken care of, they never give a time estimate, or they say ok got it, before you even tell them which apartment you live in ( so you know its going to get done if they don't even know where you are calling from... right...) or they tell you they can't do anything about it until you put it in writing and mail it to them. (weird) They never return phone calls ever and when you do get ahold of the person you need to they are never helpful. We once were locked out and called for someone to let us in and she said she was sleeping and couldnt come let us in until morning so find somewhere else to sleep that night. We ended up paying 150 for a locksmith to let us in! Overall I do not recommend at all.

These people are completely unresponsive and very rude. I have to call them several times to get something fixed.
They always ask me for my phone number and promise that they will get back to me. They never do.
I have been trying to get my intercom fixed for almost a year. They haven't done anything to fix it because it would cost them money.
The building is dirty, they don't mind cleaning it.

Do not rent from these people. They were impossible to get in contact with, the landlady is horribly condescending when you do get in touch with her, she will blame you for anything that goes wrong with the apartment, and nothing that gets broken will ever get fixed. The apartment was completely disgusting when I moved in, meaning that the "freshly cleaned" apartment they offer involved someone giving the carpets a once-over with a vacuum. Not only that, when I moved into my new apartment last week, I left behind some cleaning supplies and some of my things, meaning to give the place a once-over before I moved out for good. Now today, four days before my lease expires, I go into my apartment only to find that someone has come in and thrown out everything I left behind. When I contacted the landlady, she claimed that someone called and told them I had moved out. Neither I nor my roommate had made any such call. Again, do not rent from these people and ignore any positive reviews on this site and any others like it.

I would give them a negative number for friendliness if I could. The lady was incredibly condescending whenever we called about a problem, and would usually try to blame it on us no matter what it was. The apartment was a dump when we moved in, clearly hadn't been cleaned...neighbors are incredibly loud all the time, and there's basically no insulation in the floor/ceilings (you can hear everything above and below you). Not worth the cheap rent.

This company has neglected to return security deposit and 1/2 month's rent fo over 4 months since vacating apartment at the end of the lease. Repairs were shotty and very delayed. When completed, messes were left behind. The landlord, Evelyn Favish is rude and consistently lies.

I rented here when E&J DID own this building and were the landlords. They weren't bad to rent from, but the building wasn't the greatest. They had some fantastical ideas about tenants' income though. They wanted each tenants' income to be four times the cost of rent, making the total income of both renters (college students), eight times the rent ($640). What college kids make over $1,200 a month? Be realistic, people.

Definitely the worst landlord I've ever had. These people do absolutely nothing to maintain their properties in satisfactory condition. We had constant problems with the ceiling leaking throughout our apartment. As a result, there were visible signs of water damage as well as black mold caused by a leak in the bathroom ceiling. We repeatedly asked that a hallway light be fixed and after about 4 months and countless requests I finally took it upon myself to fix it. If you rent from them, pray that nothing goes wrong with your apartment. On numerous ocassions we were told these problems would be remedied, but they never were. In my opinion, these people are habitual liars. On numerous occasions we were told things that had absolutely no basis/merit and promised things that never came to fruition. Furthermore upon the termination of our lease we were charged $75 for "papar work" (btw it's spelled "paper"). If you are seeking to rent (btw their phone number is 412-421-1945), I advise you to look elsewhere. I know of several other tenants who've had problems with these people, so I can safely say it's not just me.

I just moved here and they have been so helpful, they even got the handyman to help me move my stuff in since I didn't have anyone else. The apartment was clean & they had a really good carpeting company-the carpet really looked great! and when the bathroom caulking wasn't finished before I moved in(they let me move in 2 days early since the last tenant moved out early) they sent the handyman the next day, they were very helpful in giving me info about the area. They are really nice and the repairs that I have needed have been done within a day or two! I would definately keep renting from them. Its nice to find nice honest landlords in such a big city!

Ilove living here! The apartment is beautiful and the hardwood flrs are in GREAT shape! The management is really nice and have always gotten any problems that I have had fixed very fast. Their workers are all very nice and I've lived here for more than 5 years & would definately recommend them!

These people are slumlords. I'm not sure who the previous few posters are talking about!
I moved out over a period of a few weeks during the last month of my lease. About 3 weeks prior to the end of my lease I began living at my new apartment, and contined making trips to move my remaining belongings from E&J's property. One night, with about 2 weeks remaining on my lease, I went over to retrieve my dresser, and it was gone! The landlords had literally entered my apartment and stolen my dresser! When I called about this, they told me they thought I had gone for good (I had not notified them I was leaving, I had not left my keys, and I still had a couple weeks on my lease). I threatened to file a police report, and they said they would return the dresser to the apartment. The next day I came back and found the dresser standing in the middle of the living room. When I lifted it up, one of the legs fell off. Basically, they stole my property and returned it broken. They also stole a brand new shirt with tags still on it from the dresser (the stuff in the dresser they did not want was strewn all over the living room floor).
I strongly advise avoiding these people. They are dishonest, rude, and have no respect for your property.

They deserve a rating lower than 1. Not only did the landlords allow us to move into the apartment in disgusting condition, but they also would not respond when we tried to report any problems. When we tried to report anything, the land lord was either impossible to reach or she would make false promises of fixing the problems. She was worthless and bad at communicating.
