I lived in a Dawson St. apt of theirs for my last 2 years of school back in 2000. While they were not THE WORST landlords I've had in Oakland, they were everything that everyone has already said about them. So that doesnt say much about the slumlords that control Oakland apartments. The windows of my unit did not lock properly (and we were on the 1st floor)...no one cared and we were told to get some 2x4s to put in them to keep them shut. Fred & joe definitely lurked around A LOT, and my roommate and I were convinced they spied on our conversations somehow. They would just pop out of nowhere- it was very creepy. if we parked for LITERALLY ONE MINUTE in the parking lot (where we did not rent a space to park) to unload groceries or something they would appear instantaneously. It was like magic. considering one of them is supposedly a plumber, they did a piss-poor job repairing our bathroom sink (it was non-functional for a few weeks or so while they dicked around buying parts or whateve). I remember using the bathtub to wash our hands. They kept it so cold in the winter we would heat the apartment with our gas oven.

Fred and Joe are the WORST landlords I have ever had. I would like to start off by saying that when we moved it, nobody lived in the house for a year and they didn't feel like there was a need to clean it. There was about an inch of dirt on the ground and green fungus all over the toilet and bathtub. The toilet also wouldn't flush and we told them as soon as we moved in and they still blamed it on us. Then the ceiling in our kitchen started leaking from the bathroom upstairs. Joe insisted it was because we did not know how to use the shower curtain and that was why the ceiling was leaking. my window would also not close completely so they begrudgingly put in a new window after I insisted over and over. That was just the start. Then they wouldn't give us a parking space to use because we didn't have a car and so no one else we knew could use it. One time someone dropped me off in the back parking lot and he came and screamed at us for being back there even though we hadn't even parked. They were also constantly lurking around our house. EVERY TIME I went outside they were out there just creeping around and they would ask me where I was going and knew when I worked and watched me come and go. It got to the point where I would go out the front door because I didn't want them watching me. They also liked to put their arms around us a lot which made me feel really uncomfortable.
They liked yelled at us a lot, like physically got up in our face and screamed at us. They yelled at my female roomate (I guess they like to do that to girls) and she would get really upset and do what they wanted. When we were about to move out I went up and asked him what all we needed to do to get our security deposit back and when we needed to be out. He told me we had to putty and paint, shampoo carpets, etc (after they gave us the apt so dirty) but I said whatever and did it and spent the WHOLE WEEKEND cleaning. He didn't know what day we were suppose to move out and said just give the key whenever on Sunday. Then I got a frantic call from that same roommate saying Joe came up and screamed at her for trespassing Sunday because we supposedly had to be out at 7am. I left work early to deal with things and ended up in a screaming match with little dirty Joe. Technically our lease said 7am but he said other wise. I was caught by technicality. I lost $75 per key (I had two keys) and the rest of my deposit because I had trash on the back porch he wouldn't let me take to the dumpster. He tricked me to get the deposit I worked so hard to get back. Don't let these scum manipulate and bully you like he did us. I should have called the police for harassment because he got up in my face. I guess its easy for a dirty unhappy man to take his anger out on niave college students.

I would like everyone to know AGAIN that you should not FOR ANY REASON rent from these men. They are horrible manipulate bullies and the most uneducated scum I have ever meant. Don't give yourself the headache.
