My letter to my landlord

I was VERY unhappy with my landlord after I recieved my security deposit and thought I would share my letter that I wrote to him. Don Mandell, I wanted to write you and tell you a few things that I disagree with. The fact that I got charged $46.44 for a gallon of EXTERIOR paint, a sand block and paintbrush. When you should have gotten a QUART (since I told you it was for touch ups) of semi-gloss INTERIOR TRIM paint that costs $10.48 at Lowe’s. You also got the most EXPENSIVE sponge sanding block at the store, instead of the one for $4.27 you could have gotten the one for $2.17, same size, just a different brand. There was water-based paint, painted over oil based paint, which WE had to sand down even though WE weren’t at fault for the paint chipping. But yet we sanded and painted anyways. Whoever decided to paint over the oil based paint is at fault, from us being there and the paint chipping is considered normal wear and tear, you are not legally allowed to take that out of my security deposit. As for the electric bill. I shouldn’t have been charged for ANY amount due over the first of January. There for the bill that SHOULD have been taken out of my security deposit SHOULD have been $264.12. We had spoken about the last months rent and security deposit. Why did it take you TWO MONTHS to decide that you really wanted the $122 for Decembers rent? Why was it okay for you to ask Ryan to “fix something” in the building, but it wasn’t okay for you to talk to him on the phone about the security deposit? Why would you hang up on him when he wanted to talk to you about it? My son is turning 5 soon and HE doesn’t even act that childish. It is AGAINST THE LAW to have “special” rules for children. You left a message on my machine asking me to keep my children quiet and/or to leave the apartment during the day because my downstairs neighbor worked odd hours. Its not MY problem that she works odd hours…. How about YOU try and keep a 2 and 4 yr old quiet during the day… and PLEASE tell me how well it works. It is very irresponsible as a landlord to make sure that you get the most expensive things and not even to let us be aware that we were responsible for the costs. You are suppose to be a professional, you did not act like one in the least in the time that we were tenants. You never “asked us” about any situation that happened with the other neighbors, you just took one side of the story and didn’t bother asking about the other side. Unprofessional in the least! You NEVER gave us a date of when the things needed to be finished, but yet you think its ok to change the locks on us WITHOUT a phone call? You WALKED right in the apartment before we even was officially moved out (which you knew about), As a “landlord” you are NOT ALLOWED under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE to talk about other tenants and what you may think of them, what their bills are, or talk about the way they live. Talking badly about myself and family is the MOST DISRESPECTFUL and IRRISPONSIBLE thing that a professional like yourself should do! It is considered discrimination when there are some tenants with a washer/dryer key and some without. As a landlord that is NOT allowed. You could be fined and responsible for many costs because of you being an irresponsible and vindictive landlord. I HAVE obtained all of this from a lawyer and landlord laws. I am not the ONLY tenant in that building that disapproves with your way of being a landlord. I am a tenant, not a landlord. It was not my responsibility to do HALF of what I did in the apartment before I left. But I chose to grin and bear it because I have children to raise and needed THAT money so I could have a roof over our heads. But instead you had to be SELFISH and IRRISPONSIBLE and keep what is OWED to myself and family. And WHAT SHOULD have been owed to myself and family is $469.26. But instead I received $181.82 less. I WILL NOT recommend you as a landlord, I WILL NOT recommend any of my family or friends to your business. You have disappointed me in the least and I will make sure it will be known to anyone and everyone I know of how much of a terrible and irresponsible person that you really are. Good Day C****** D.
